Leonard Peltier

Visiting the US federal inmate #89637-132

In February 1995, accredited by the Gamma press agency, paying a quite exceptional visit for a representative of the international press to Leonard Peltier at the Leavenworth Penitentiary, Kansas.
Accused of the double murder of two FBI agents in 1976 during a trial found to be unfair, Leonard Peltier, an Anishinaabe-Lakota Indian, is considered by many to be the oldest political prisoner in the world.
Following this visit, an article was published in June 1995 in the famous last page “Portrait” of the daily french newspaper Libération under the title: “LEONARD PELTIER. Nicknamed “the Mandela of the Indians”, the activist sentenced to life in Kansas has become the symbol of the fight for Indian rights(in french).
In 2022, Leonard Peltier has begun his forty-sixth year of incarceration.
